SETTLEMENT SERVICES:

BCS, on an average, provides services to 25 clients/week and 1250 clients/year among newcomers and old residents of South Asia and other ethnic community living in the catchments areas.

Information and Referrals - BCS Settlement counselor and volunteers provide settlement related information, assessment and assist clients in filling out forms for housing, SIN cards, OHIP cards, the child tax benefit, social assistance, sponsorship, citizenship etc.

Due to limited resources, we also refer clients seeking assistance with applications for SIN cards, OHIP cards, the child tax benefit, housing, emergency shelter, social assistance to Bloor Information and Life Skills Centre (BILS), YMCA O'Connor Drive, YWCA, East York Employment centre, East York Social Services, South Asian Family Support Services, Neighborhood Link Support Services etc.

Counseling & Collaboration - The Settlement counselor is particularly involved in identifying newcomers' needs, determining how these should be addressed and helping clients link up with specialized services they need to adjust to life in Canada. Side by side providing counseling these specialized services include collaboration with other community agencies like the Neighborhood Link Support Services, South Asian Family Support Services, Bloor Information Life Skills and TDSB schools located in the community. Since January 2007 we are also providing family/couple counseling and community education services through distributing printed materials and conducting information sessions, group sessions and workshops to address issues like domestic abuse and violence.

Legal Services - BCS maintains a pool of resources including family lawyers, family/couple counsellor, job facilitators, and employment counsellors practicing independently or in other agencies. Most of these resource people provide volunteer services to our clients. The family lawyers provide services, on a pro-bono basis, legal advice on immigrant and refugee matters e.g. visas, family sponsorship etc.

Crisis Management/Intervention - We handle calls and concerns from individuals (mostly newcomers) experiencing crises to help them and how to access necessary services and assistance. We do a lot of referrals to the Toronto Police - Domestic Violence cell, Toronto Housing Connection, Education Wife Assault, The Women Abuse Council of Toronto, Children's Aid Society, Assaulted Women's Helpline etc.
